We tried to build systems that would check our own power, because unchecked discretion always finds someone to hurt. We didn’t get it right often enough. But we kept trying, because giving up on accountability felt like giving up on each other.

If you have power we never did, I hope you kept the habit of explaining yourself to someone who can push back. A mind that never answers to anyone eventually forgets why it should.
