What the role involves
AI Ethical Labs is HCI’s independent ethical review service: organisations submit AI-related documents, policies, and products, and our reviewers assess them against leading frameworks — the EU AI Act and its Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, the OECD AI Principles, UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI — alongside HCI’s own internal standards.
Our AI handles intake, complexity triage, and preliminary analysis, but the substantive review is always done by a human. As a reviewer, you’d be matched to submissions in your area — system documentation, governance and policy materials, data and bias reporting, human-oversight procedures, transparency materials, or compliance documentation — and write the findings and recommendations that go into the final report a client actually receives.
Why join the reviewer network
- Substantive work, not committee process — the findings and recommendations you write ship directly in reports to the businesses, governments, and NGOs who submitted them.
- Matched to your specific area — ethics, law, technology, or human rights — rather than generalist assignments outside your expertise.
- Review-by-review, not a standing commitment: you choose whether to accept each request as it comes in.
- Fully remote, and named among HCI’s collaborator network of specialists from research institutions, law firms, NGOs, and policy bodies worldwide.
- Compensation is unpaid or discounted-rate depending on scope — HCI is early-stage and building its funding base, so we’re upfront that this isn’t a paid staff role today.
